Ariane grew up in Kathmandu, Nepal and was lucky enough to travel often and develop an appreciation for the many diverse cultures and environments of the world. She attended Carleton College in Northfield, MN and received a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Studies with a focus on conservation and development. She studied abroad twice: the first was a semester as part of the crew on a 135ft Sea Education Association sailing ship making the journey from Tahiti to Hawaii and researching sustainability on Polynesian islands; the second was in Namibia, for a semester with Round River Conservation Studies, working with local communal conservancies to improve their wildlife monitoring and management strategies.  Since graduation, Ariane has taken advantage of various volunteer and internship opportunities in the field.  She became a rescue diver and assisted a UK-based NGO, Blue Ventures, with underwater surveys in a locally managed marine area off the coast of southwestern Madagascar.  She also interned at the Monteverde Institute, researching the habitat of the rare Three-wattled Bellbird in the cloud forests of Costa Rica.

Currently, she is pursuing a Master’s degree in Community Sustainability. Her thesis work will focus on community-managed forests in Nepal. In the future, Ariane hopes to work with communities around the world to strengthen their capacity for sustainable natural resource management.
