MSU Forest Carbon and Climate Program represented at the 2024 Goddard Forum: Visioning Climate- Smart Forestry in the Mid-Atlantic Region
FCCP along with Dr. Raju Pokharel presented at the 2024 Goddard Forum: Visioning Climate-Smart Forestry in the Mid-Atlantic Region on assessing the carbon impacts and economic tradeoffs of managing for carbon in Pennsylvania’s forests.
STATE COLLEGE, Penn. – Dr. Chad Papa along with Dr. Raju Pokharel, MSU Department of Forestry, represented the MSU FCCP at the 2024 Goddard Forum: Visioning Climate-Smart Forestry in the Mid-Atlantic Region hosted at Pennsylvania State University. The Maurice K. Goddard Chair in Forestry and Environmental Resource Conservation supports science-policy dialogue forums on a range of environmental challenges of relevance in Pennsylvania and the Mid-Atlantic region. The objective of the Goddard Forum is to build a shared vision among a range of stakeholders to better understand opportunities for evidence-based policy engagement.
Dr. Chad Papa presented findings on the scale and impact of implementing various climate-smart forest management practices statewide for forest carbon storage and sequestration in both the forest ecosystems and harvested wood product carbon pools previously published here. Dr. Raju presented preliminary findings of a subsequent analysis investigating the implementation of climate-smart forestry to understand the economic effects of prioritizing different management approaches for timber and carbon.
The forum brought together stakeholders across forestry including academics, students, consulting foresters, natural resource managers, federal regulators, and industry representatives to better help define climate-smart forestry in the context of Pennsylvania and develop a shared vision for the future to continue to promote the essential benefits of forests.
