As summer winds down, a new type of busyness begins: the start of back-to-school, extracurricular activities, and the upcoming holiday seasons. With too much to do and not enough time in the day to do it, many of us find it difficult to set aside time to refresh and recharge.

To help you navigate these busy end-of-year activities, MSU Extension is offering a free, virtual September self-care series.

Open to any adult who wants to take time out of the day to learn to take better care of themselves, these one-hour sessions begin at 6:30 pm ET. Registration is open now through September 23, 2024, and you can choose which sessions you want to attend when you register. These sessions will not be recorded.

The four classes offered are:

  • Calming Down and De-Stressing
    Sept. 3, 2024
Anger is a human emotion all feel at one time or another because…we are human! Anger is neither good nor bad, it just is. During this workshop participants will be introduced to the effects of stress and anger on the brain and body. Participants will also practice ways to calm down and de-stress when angry.

  • Mindful Self-Compassion
    Sept. 10, 2024
When we lack self-compassion, we may find it difficult to be compassionate toward others. However, self-compassion is often viewed as being self-indulgent or selfish. During this session, we will discuss the components and benefits of self-compassion and practice an activity to help you experience what self-compassion feels like.

  • Changing Negative Self-Talk
    Sept. 17, 2024
Do you ever feel like your thoughts are spiraling in a negative direction? What if we talked to ourselves like we did with a good friend? You can! During this session, participants will learn about the brain’s negativity bias and how it affects our stress response. In addition, we will talk about the benefits of positive self-talk and explore other tools for dealing with negative self-talk.

  • Forgiving and Letting Go
    Sept. 24, 2024
How individuals handle their anger and stress affects the people around them. This workshop helps to increase knowledge about anger issues and put healthy relationship skills into practice. This lesson includes ways to begin to explore forgiveness and letting go of past hurts that might be weighing heavy on your heart.

Previous participants shared the following feedback:

  • "I really needed this!"
  • "I want you to know the energy is so relaxing. All of the sessions are right on time!"
  • "This was an amazing resource."
