Food science students take 3rd place in IFT food product development competition
MSU's Food Product Development Team was awarded a bronze metal in this year's competition sponsored by the IFTSA and M&M Mars.
At the annual meeting of the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) in Chicago, the MSU student Food Product Development Team placed third (among 25 teams) in the 2018 IFTSA M&M MARS FPD Competition.
Members of the winning team are Elizabeth Kurburski (team leader), Rachel Hand, Milena Montgomery, Maisie Snyder, Natasha Sloniker, Sarah Ebaugh, Hampton Noe, Ellie Haun, Lauren Burke, and Alex Gavrilos. Additional congratulations go out to Ed Szczygiel (PhD candidate) and Shelby Cieslinski (MS candidate), who guided and helped the team from the beginning on their achievement.
It is a real honor for MSU food science students to place in the top three -- four years in a row. Most university teams consist of primarily graduate students but our undergraduates consistently perform at a high level.
The winning product -- SliceCream -- is a unique ice cream novelty consisting of a naturally sweetened reduced sugar vanilla bean ice cream, encased in a cinnamon waffle cone with a layer of honey, capped off with rich dark chocolate. SliceCream comes in a pack of six portioned wedges that are 110 calories a serving. The team promoted SliceCream as "the better-for-you ice cream treat that everyone can delight in!"
