ANS Community Norms
The Department of Animal Science aims to create a culture where every member of the department feels valued, seen, heard, and respected. The Community Norms set forth expectations of everyone – student, staff, faculty, visitor – to always treat each other with respect and civility.
PROMOTE DEI
To promote Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) in our community, members of the Department of Animal Science will:
- Accept that we are all unique and that our uniqueness is an asset for accomplishing our mission to support teaching, learning, research, and outreach at MSU
- Respect differences and acknowledge our biases
- Reject all forms of discrimination, harassment, and violence. This includes severe, persistent bullying; rude, inconsiderate behaviors; and micro-aggressions
ACT WITH RESPECT & CIVILITY
To ensure that all community members act with respect and civility, we will:
- Treat each other with respect and courtesy regardless of differences
- Listen to each other to understand with empathy
- Tolerate opinions that differ from our own and engage in productive dialogue that includes all
viewpoints - Respect each other’s time and schedules; providing full attention during meetings or events
BUILD COMMUNITY
As members of the Department of Animal Science, we will strive to build a more cohesive and connected
community. To accomplish this, we will:
- Collaborate and recognize we work better together
- Value and encourage collaborations while acknowledging individual contributions
- Maintain open lines of communication in our community
- Make space for everyone’s voice and acknowledging power differentials
- Not blame, shame, or attack other members of the community
We recognize mistakes can and will happen because every person is in a different space in learning about Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI). When a mistake is made ACT…Apologize, Correct the mistake, and Try again. When seeking clarification on something said or done, use PALS…Pause, Ask (again), Listen, and then Speak. SpartANS Will.
