Joao Sacramento
João Sacramento is a Research Associate at Michigan State University, specializing in grazing management and its impact on greenhouse gas emissions and soil health. João carries out this work at the Lake City AgBio Research Center, where he also serves as a co-principal Investigator on a project utilizing remote sensing technology and drones (UAVs) to predict biomass and forage quality and create models for estimating methane emissions.
João earned his Bachelor's degree in Animal Science from the Federal University of São João del Rei (UFSJ) and pursued his MSc. and Ph.D. in Bioengineering at UFSJ in collaboration with the Embrapa Dairy Cattle Research Corporation (EMBRAPA). His doctoral research concentrated on optimizing the nutritional requirements of crossbred cows to boost milk production in tropical conditions.
In addition to his work at Michigan State University, João has experience as a research scholar at the University of New Hampshire (UNH), where he focused on dairy nutrition and methane mitigation strategies in both conventional and organic dairy farming systems. Currently, his research aims to advance grazing management practices to improve soil carbon, soil health, and overall ecosystem function, along with modeling landscape changes. Developing metrics and management practices that drive ecological enhancement in grazing land systems.
