Tribal Food Producer Information Session: Tax Preparation and Tax Resources – March 12, 2025

This virtual meeting hosted on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, offered a space for Tribal food producers from across the Great Lakes Midwest to gather and learn together.
This session led by Dale Grant, PLLC, Ashton Business Consulting focused on recordkeeping for tax preparation and funding opportunities for farm businesses. Participants learned about the importance of organized tax records, the three kinds of federal tax returns that can be used by small- and mid- sized farm businesses, how to lower tax liabilities, as well as the benefits of using an accounting system and having a profit and loss statement.
This session was facilitated by Jen Falck (Oneida Nation), owner of Kahulahele Farmstead and Partnership Program Coordinator, Menominee Tribe’s Department of Agriculture and Food Systems; Dan Cornelius (Oneida Nation), owner of Yowela Farms, grower of heritage Indigenous crops, and Outreach Program Manager for the University of Wisconsin Law School’s Great Lakes Indigenous Law Center and the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences; and Marc Grignom (Menominee Nation), hemp farmer, Intertribal Food Business Development Coordinator for Menominee Tribe’s Department of Agriculture and Food Systems and Policy and Strategy Specialist for the Rural Coalition.

The facilitators were joined by Julie Jesmer, John McCarthy, and Jamie Rahrig of Michigan State University Center for Regional Food Systems, who shared more about the upcoming Business Builder subaward program. The first phase of the Business Builder subaward program will soon open for food and/or farm businesses in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin. Over $10 million dollars will be distributed across the region to assistance providers and through the grant program over the next four years.
