How to organize and conduct a fitting & showing contest

  • Meet with 4-H rabbit leaders from neighboring counties to discuss the contest.
  • Suggest the idea of a fitting and showing contest to the local animal science programming committees.
  • Inform the county fair board of special requirements for conducting the contest months in advance.
  • Select a judge or judges in advance.
  • Publicize the event.
  • Contact potential sponsors.

Materials needed

  • Judging arena
  • Several long tables
  • Rugs or carpet pieces
  • Holding pens for rabbits
  • Scorecards
  • Judge’s checklist
  • Identification numbers for the contestants
  • PA system
  • Awards

Suggested fair book details

Class: 4-H Rabbit fitting and showing contest

  • All participants must be 4-H member.
  • All participants must be enrolled in the rabbit project during the current calendar year.

Section 1: Junior division – 11 years old and under

Section 2: Intermediate division – 12 to 14 years old

Section 3: Senior division – 15 to 19 years old

Group: In a contest, there shouldn’t be more than 10 contestants at a time in any one section. If there are more than 10 contestants, divide them into groups of 10 or less. Then select the first three places from each group and combine them for a final contest.
