How to purchase a new computer, printer or other IT related devices

New PSM procurement procedure

PSM Community Members:

MSU Purchasing requires prior approval for all Information Technology (IT) related purchases made utilizing a purchasing card at the University. MSU Purchasing defines IT purchases as: “any equipment or interconnected system or subsystem of equipment that is used in the creation, conversion, or duplication of data or information.”

These purchases can include software (both free and at cost), but also include other items such as desktops, laptops, tablets, web delivered content, and more. MSU Procurement provides more information on their website which we recommend you bookmark for future use.

What does this mean for me?

In order to streamline IT procurement in PSM and assist you in making the best, most economical decision regarding IT purchases that fit your needs, we would like you to complete the following steps for purchasing IT items:

  • Complete an initial needs survey for desktop, laptop, and tablet purchases. This will give us a good starting point for what type of device you need so we can assist you.
  • Contact PSM IT before making any IT purchases, especially with any questions regarding software or other IT related issues.

Following these steps will help save time/effort while also helping to standardize equipment when possible, allowing for more effective and efficient support for the entire department. This process may also allow you to purchase already approved IT items, so you may be able to avoid filling out the EIT form for that purchase.

Who should I contact with questions?

If you have any questions or need assistance, please contact PSM IT at PSMIT.Support@msu.edu or (517) 353-0107.
