October 25, 2024 - Dr. Shelly Sundberg

On August 16, 2024, Dr. Shelly Sundberg, interim director of Gender, Nutrition, and Climate Change Adaptation, visited Nigeria to learn about the RSM2SNF project and engage with partners. The event, held at Adis Hotels in Ibadan, had 36 participants, including market leaders, government officers, development partners, civil society organizations, and the project's research team.

The session started with an introduction by participants, followed by a presentation from the project principal investigator, Prof. Saweda Liverpool-Tasie. The presentation highlighted MSMEs' roles in agri-food value chains and detailed the four major components of the RSM2SNF project: research, co-creation activities, capacity building for early career scholars, and market metrics.

Early Career Scholars shared their experiences with the project, including enhanced research and communication skills. The Food Safety Lead provided updates on food safety activities, such as survey findings, literature reviews, training of traders, and government engagements regarding food safety practices. The government has invited the project to further collaborate on food safety guidelines.

Stakeholders, including market representatives, discussed improvements such as better hygiene practices, enhanced market infrastructure, and the need for continued government support. Government representatives emphasized collaboration, highlighting the provision of market infrastructure and improved waste management practices.

Dr. Shelly commended the project for its focus on nutritious food and co-creation approach, which involves stakeholders in developing solutions rather than imposing them. The event concluded with a visit to Rahama market, where Dr. Shelly interacted with traders and inspected market infrastructure.
