On May 20-21, 2024, the RSM2SNF project conducted a 2-day food safety training for fish processors and traders at the Rahama market in Ibadan, Oyo State. The event was held at the University of Ibadan's Center for Sustainable Development, gathering around 80 participants each day. Attendees included fish processors, traders, government officials, environmental health personnel, researchers, and academics interested in food safety and the fish value chain.

The training aimed to enhance the food safety practices of processors and traders in the market. It began with an opening prayer and welcome remarks, followed by a presentation on training principles by the project's principal investigator. The project team emphasized that the training would also help them learn about the current handling practices of processors and traders.

The food safety lead led participants through each module of the RSM2SNF training manual, covering hygiene practices for fish products. Modules 1-3 were completed on the first day, while Modules 4-6 were covered on the second day. All presentations were in English, but interpreters provided real-time translation to Hausa, facilitating participation among predominantly Hausa-speaking traders.

Surveys were conducted before and after the training to evaluate participants’ knowledge and attitude toward food safety practices. The training sessions concluded with key takeaways, including the desire for continuous training and a commitment to adopting safer processing practices. Participants expressed their willingness to collaborate on developing interventions that would further improve hygiene practices, potentially attracting investors and increasing market incomes.
