Disorders and Storage of Ambrosia Apples

DOWNLOAD

July 17, 2024 - Jennifer DeEll, Ontario Ministry of Food and Agriculture

Ambrosia apple is a high-quality, valuable fruit cultivar, but its storage offers many challenges. It is prone to several storage disorders including lenticel breakdown, internal browning, senescent breakdown, CO2 injury, and chilling injury. This presentation documents several years of storage experiments with Ambrosia to optimize quality retention in storage. Important tools for quality preservation include storage at a non-chilling temperature (3 °C) or slow or delayed cooling to 0.5 °C, use of 1-MCP pre and/or post-harvest, proper maturity management, and CA at 1.2% O2 and 1% CO2. Lower O2 is possible if DCA monitoring is in place.
