4-H Children’s Art Exchange Study Guide
April 16, 2015
Every year, through the Michigan 4-H Children's Art Exchange, kindergartners to sixth graders are invited to send "visual letters" to children their own ages in China. Teaching kits are available to facilitate teaching about China and about making art. Each teaching kit is unique and consists of nine or ten original pictures by Chinese children, a study guide and a description of the pictures that come with the kit. This study guide (available in both Word and pdf formats) accompanies the teaching kits and plays an essential role in providing the best possible hands-on global and arts education experience for children. It is divided into four parts:
- Part 1 introduces China and the Chinese children who have sent their pictures to Michigan.
- Part 2 helps adults and older teens talk about the Chinese children's art with Michigan children.
- Part 3 helps users guide children through creating their own art work.
- Part 4 provides directions for mounting and displaying the children's works of art.
Adults and older teens don't have to be art teachers or artists, or have an arts background, to lead children in an arts experience. However, they do need to be willing to let the children experiment, be messy, have fun, and express their own thoughts and ideas with paper and paint, crayons and pencil. (20 pages, 2009)
