  • Describe the biggest challenge you faced this year as a result of the MDARD show stop and how you handled it.

SHOWMANSHIP (30 pts) _______________

Bringing bird to judge
Caging and removing bird from cage
Posing and presenting bird to judge
Displaying, examining and naming body parts
Transferring bird to another person

Sample questions:

  • What goals did you set this year for yourself and your project animal?
  • How do you display confidence in the show ring?
  • Do you think showing would have been easier or harder with a live bird? What would you have done differently?

KNOWLEDGE (40 pts) _______________

Judge’s discretion – questions may include any or all of the following topics:

  • Project evaluations questions targeting life skills (see attached)
  • How would you have prepared your bird for this show?
  • Age, sex, breed, variety and class of your bird
  • Purpose of breed (exhibition/eggs/meat/dual purpose)
  • Defects and disqualifications for your breed and variety
  • Your feed program
  • Your poultry health program; common diseases and parasites
  • Avian anatomy

BIOSECURITY & AVIAN INFLUENZA KNOWLEDGE (15 pts) _______________

Judge’s discretion – questions may include any or all of the following topics:

  • What steps did/do you take to ensure your animal stayed healthy? (Biosecurity practices with their home flock)
  • Strains of avian influenza
  • How the disease is transmitted
  • Steps to take when disease is suspected or found
  • How has the stop of shows by MDARD helped you develop leadership?
  • How has the stop of shows by MDARD helped you to better understand the livestock industry?
