Katie LaCommare, Ph.D.
Biography:
I am trained as an organismal and conservation biologist but specialize in biology education. I deeply believe in experiential and engaged learning. As a teacher, I foster student engagement and experiential learning by teaching with student activities that encourage the application and synthesis of concepts. I strive to create a welcoming environment and a classroom where all students feel they belong.
I am particularly interested in the teaching and learning of evolution. I am currently working on a project to better understand how a series of metacognitive interventions can dislodge student misconceptions on difficult biological topics. Prior to focusing on teaching, my research focused on assessing manatee habitat use in Belize and developing low-cost population assessment strategies.
