Professor of Anthropology and board chair of the Center for African Peace and Conflict Resolution at California State University, Sacramento, USA. My research interest is centred on understanding connections between identity, state power and inequalities in the material conditions of multiple identity-bearing citizens. Published extensively on contemporary issues in Ethiopia including inequality and identity; ethnicity and cultural rights; land tenure and property rights, governance and social justice; conflicts and (re)mediation. Most recent book: Contesting Inequality, Identity and Rights in Ethiopia. Routledge, 2018. Currently I am working on rural livelihood dynamics and wellbeing in the upstream areas of the Gilgel Gibe III dam.
