Dickinson County 4-H volunteer Kim Wright has been honored with a prestigious Michigan 4-H Salute to Excellence Volunteer of the Year award. Wright was recognized on Sept. 30 during the Michigan 4-H Legacy Awards Celebration hosted by Michigan State University Extension and the Michigan 4-H Foundation in East Lansing.
The 4-H Volunteer of the Year Award is presented to outstanding 4-H volunteers who have 10 years of service or less. Winners are selected through a statewide nomination and review process.
The award highlights the important work of 4-H volunteers across the state who share their time, energy and commitment to 4-H every day to improve the lives of Michigan young people. Through the 4-H Salute to Excellence Awards program, MSU Extension’s 4-H Youth Development program honors outstanding volunteers for their unwavering dedication to 4-H and Michigan young people.
Wright is well known in her community as a 4-H volunteer people can turn to for anything. A former Dickinson County 4-H’er herself, Wright is the first to step up and offer a helping hand whenever an educational or event opportunity arises. Whether it is orchestrating livestock clinics, planning the county 4-H fun show, helping coordinate the county 4-H recognition banquet, or developing new 4-H connections, Wright is there to make it happen.
“[My greatest reward is] having the opportunity to provide fun and educational programs to youth,” said Wright. “I love seeing the passion they have for learning new things. It is the best thing in the world to watch them develop as individuals and I am grateful to be a part of their journey.”
Wright’s hard work benefits all of Dickinson County, as she opens all of her educational activities to any young person in the county, not just those in her club or even those just in 4-H. Furthermore, Wright’s ongoing commitment to raising local funds to support Dickinson County educational opportunities will continue to benefit community young people for years to come.
The Michigan 4-H Legacy Awards Celebration was hosted and emceed by MSU Extension Associate Director Matt Shane, a Kent County 4-H alumnus and 2014 4-H Emerald Clover Society inductee. Michelle (Anders) McNamara also received a 4-H Salute to Excellence Award at the event for 2023 Outstanding Lifetime Volunteer.
