West central Michigan apple maturity report – Sept. 12, 2018

Updates on maturity status of Gala, McIntosh, Honeycrisp, Early Fuji, Jonathan, Jonagold and Empire.

General harvest comments

Gala harvest is underway in central and eastern Oceana County and early sites in Mason County. McIntosh is immature, but is being harvested for processing all the same across the region. Honeycrisp needs to be gone over for at least a first pick in the next week at many locations, having moved ahead at a surprising pace in the past seven days. The variety is rapidly approaching over-maturity. This jump ahead could bring up some problems with getting enough help at the right time to get the crop off.

Apple maturity is advancing at a very rapid pace this year, so conventional wisdom on when varieties are “supposed to” be ready could get you in trouble—rely on data for the location when you can. As you will see in the site results below, major jumps from last week were observable in most varieties that were sampled. Soft fruit, particularly in Honeycrisp, Early Fuji and McIntosh is a concern.

Some stem bowl cracking has been observed on Gala and other susceptible varieties, but does not seem to be serious at most locations. Incidence of fruit rots such as bitter pit as well as sooty blotch and fly speck ticked up a bit this week too. Growers are concerned about drop issues and harvest timing on fruit that matured sooner than anticipated, and have been diligently applying ReTain and Harvista to help combat this issue.

Color in the crop is generally very good. Incidence of water core has been surprisingly low thus far, but bitter pit, particularly on Honeycrisp, was showing up more this week.

Individual variety results

The scales used to rate these different metrics on these charts are as follows:

  • Background color: scale 1-4; 1 is fully yellow and 4 is fully green.
  • Russet: scale 1-4; 1 is no russet and 4 is severe russet.
  • Pressure: always listed in pounds per square inch, and two pressure scores are recorded for each apple tested.
  • Watercore: scale 1-4; 1 is no watercore and 4 is severe watercore.
  • Bleeding: scale 0-4; 0 is no bleeding of red color into flesh and 4 is severe bleeding of red color in to flesh.
  • Red: listed as a percentage of the whole fruit with red color.

McIntosh was sampled for the fourth time this week and did move ahead a bit from last week. It is not physiologically mature, but it will be largely harvested by the end of the week across the area all the same because the local buyers have asked for it. It is “economically mature” in the region, so this will be the last week the variety is sampled. The two individual sites that are left were the two that were not yet picked when samples were taken this week.

Gala maturity is variable across the area right now, but well over half of the sites that were sampled this week should be picked aggressively in the next several days. The Mears location was not listed this week because it was already being harvested on Monday. Make sure you have maturity data collected on any site that is in question. Gala currently range from approaching over-maturity to a week off from harvest, depending on site.

Generally, data indicate this variety is moving very fast, so getting it in to bins at early locations is important. Eastern and central Oceana County and early sites in Mason County should be going after the variety right now, and western Oceana County and most of Mason County will be joining in at the end of the week or early next week.

Early Fuji was sampled for the fourth time this week and is ready for harvest for CA storage in Walkerville and other eastern/early parts of Oceana and Mason counties. Most Mason County sites are either ready now or just shy of being ready, so the entire west central region is going to be clear to pick this variety by the end of the week, and many should be going after it as fast as they can right now. Fruit is getting very soft on this variety, so getting after it quickly would be wise, especially as growers eye getting into Honeycrisp in coming days.

Honeycrisp was sampled for the third time this week. This variety took an absolutely huge jump ahead in the past week, and is ready to be picked over for the first time at half of sites that it was tested from. Generally, growers in central and eastern Oceana County need to be getting after this variety as soon as possible, and Mason County growers and Oceana County growers at later sites will probably be able to get after it by early next week. It is ready for CA storage at a starch index of 3.5, and many places have pushed well past that mark.

Fruit firmness on this variety is way down, and appearances can be very deceiving. Growers may be reluctant to get after Honeycrisp this early, but take a look at the data below—this pattern is true on the Ridge too. This variety is speeding along right now and could cruise to the over-mature starch index mark of 7 quite quickly at current pace. I am concerned by how soft this variety is getting, which is another reason not to leave it out too long when possible.

Jonathan was sampled for the second time this week and will probably be ready for harvest by early next week. It is considered mature for CA storage at a starch index of 3.5, and we were very close at both tested sites this week. Color and size have improved greatly on this variety in the past seven days.

Empire was sampled for the first time this week, and is at least a couple of weeks away from maturity. It is still very starchy and green right now. Size has improved greatly on this variety thanks to all of the recent rain. Color is improving with cool nights, and will continue to get better as we approach harvest.

Jonagold was sampled for the first time this week and is a couple of weeks away from maturity. Color is variable on this variety and is dependent on site and strain. Firmness is good thus far, and growers selling for slicing generally look to be in a good size range this year.
