Alan (Al) Scott (’73, School of Planning, Design and Construction) will receive the 2025 CANR Alumni Service Award during the annual ANR Awards on Friday, March 7.

Alan (Al) Scott of Marblehead, Ohio, will receive a Michigan State University (MSU) College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (CANR) Alumni Service Award at the March 7 ANR Awards Program.

The Alumni Service Award honors CANR alumni who have demonstrated continuing outstanding volunteer service to MSU, the CANR or meritorious public service on a local, state, national or international level. Candidates must possess the highest standards of integrity and character to positively reflect and enhance the prestige of the CANR.

A true giant in the home building industry, Scott started his journey in the Construction Management program, earning his degree in 1973. With a career spanning over four decades, Scott’s remarkable track record in the residential construction and development industry earned him widespread national recognition.

For 13 years, Scott served as Vice President of Development at Wallick Construction Company before becoming President of Zaremba Development Company, where he led the company for seven years. In 1995, he co-founded NRP Group LLC, managing the company until his retirement in 2014, where he played a key role in positioning it as a leader in residential development. Scott then went on to found Alan F Scott (AFS) Inc., a residential development and construction company. Throughout his career, he has led development projects in 18 states, comprising more than 20,000 units and over 16,000 multifamily units.

As a Senior Life Board Member of the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), he played a pivotal role in shaping the future of the housing industry. He has served on the executive committee of the NAHB and chaired both the Senior Housing Council and the Construction Codes Committee. In recognition of his outstanding contributions, Soctt was named National Advisory Board Member of the Year by the NAHB in 2019.

In addition to his professional endeavors, Scott has personally invested in developing the next generation of CANR homebuilding leaders. In 2017, he established the Alan F. Scott Fund to support the Housing Education Research Initiative (HERI) at MSU, creating a permanent endowment fund to ensure the long-term growth of this vital initiative.

Since 2017, Scott has volunteered his time as a member of the HERI advisory board, contributing his expertise and leadership to a range of areas, including applied research projects, data collection and outreach to builders and industry associations. He has also provided hands-on support to MSU’s Residential Competition Team, helping them prepare for the National Association of Home Builders competition, where MSU teams have achieved remarkable success, securing top rankings in the competition for the past five years.

His commitment to the housing industry and MSU’s School of Planning, Design & Construction (SPDC) has earned him several honors and recognitions. Scott was a featured speaker at the 2017 SPDC Industry Seminar Series, sharing his wealth of knowledge and experience with students and professionals alike. In 2022, he was honored with the Honorary Member Award from Sigma Lambda Chi, the Construction Management Honor Society, in recognition of his exceptional contributions to industry and academia.

In addition to his professional achievements and service to MSU, Scott has been a dedicated volunteer and community leader. He has served as an ambassador for the United States Jaycees, a Lab Coat Society Member for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, and a former board member of Habitat for Humanity.
