On December 5th, the U.S. Green Building Council of West Michigan (USGBC-WM) celebrated its 20th anniversary and honored six winners and two honorable mentions at its Annual Leadership Awards Ceremony. These awards recognize individuals, organizations, and projects making a significant impact in creating energy-efficient, healthy, and sustainable buildings across Michigan.

This year, our Director Sandra Lupien had the honor of being the keynote speaker. “Mass timber can really help transform buildings from GHG emitters into carbon storage banks and benefit forest communities and occupants at the same time,” Sandra said during her address. “Demand is growing across the U.S. and in Michigan, but we need a lot more professional education and technical assistance for the AEC industry to make sure that they can successfully adopt mass timber.”

Sandra’s presentation underscored the importance of education and collaboration within the architecture, engineering, and construction industries to support the adoption of sustainable building materials like mass timber.
