Renewable Energy Fair features ways to becoming energy efficient and independent

The Michigan Renewable Energy Fair is almost here! Mark your calendar for June 26-27, 2015, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. at the Ingham County Fairgrounds in Mason, Michigan. On Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. there will be a number of fun and interactive activities for children. The Michigan Electric Auto Association and Michigan Tesla Owners will host their Electric Vehicle Show. Learn about, touch and drive electric vehicles. The vehicles expected include a number of Teslas.
Our recently elected U.S. Senator, Senator Gary Peters, has been invited to be the noon keynote speaker on Saturday. Patrick King, Vice President for Channel Sales for Suniva, will be the noon keynote speaker on Friday. The Suniva Corporation is opening a new solar panel plant in the Saginaw, Michigan area.
The theme for this year’s fair is Energy Independence and there are more than a dozen workshops each day that can help you reduce your energy dependence, save money and help the environment. Workshop topics include solar energy, community solar, net zero energy homes and micro-grids.
The fair is not a trade show, but combines fun with local food, hands-on activities and small-size workshops where you can ask questions to get the answers you need. Enjoy music as you visit the booths and exhibits. Over 100 exhibitors will provide an opportunity to find products and services that can help you make smart energy choices. Be sure to visit the Michigan State University Extension Smart Gardening booth to get tip sheets about environmentally-friendly gardening practices.
Friday night there will be a reception in the Community Hall starting at 5 p.m. and a lasagna dinner provided by the VFW from 6-7:30 p.m. Dinner is $12 for adults and $8 for children 12 and under. Saturday morning will be a VFW pancake breakfast in the Community Hall from 7:30-10 a.m. ($8 per person).
Camping is available onsite for $25 per site. The Great Lakes Renewable Energy Association is organizing a Michigan Solar Users Network (MiSUN) and there will be a kick-off meeting at the fair on Saturday at 11 a.m. Admission is $5 for individuals and $10 for families, good for both days. Kids and Great Lakes Renewable Energy Association members are free. Purchase advance tickets online or at the door.
