Q&A with EEM Senior Emma Rice
Emma Rice is a senior majoring in Environmental Economics and Management (EEM) and was recently awarded both an AFRE Outstanding Senior Award and an AFRE Academic Excellence Award.
1. What is your hometown?
Haslett, MI
2. Why did you decide to become an EEM Major?
I decided to become an EEM major because I knew I wanted to make a difference in sustaining our natural resources for generations to come. I felt that EEM was the best fit due to its core in economics, a social science, because all decisions ultimately come down to human behavior.
3. What is your favorite thing about the EEM Major?
My favorite thing about the EEM major has been that AFRE is a small department that feels like a family. All my classes are small and personal and I have gotten to know really great people with very similar interests to me.
4. What was your favorite class?
My favorite class has been EEM 260 World Food, Population and Poverty. I loved the emphasis on food security and international development because I feel that food security is a perfect intersection for my interests in social science and environmental and agricultural sciences.
5. What are your plans after graduation?
After graduating I will be remaining at MSU as a graduate student in the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife to study inland fisheries’ contribution to food security.
