Largest Botnet Ever Disrupted

At the end of May, the FBI and Interpol  took control of a bot net comprised of approximately 19 million IP computers.   The botnet was used to provide anonymous access to cyber criminals to perform criminal proxied through the compromised computers, thus masking the real origin of the criminal activity.   There were various techniques used to to surreptitiously compromise the end users computers, one of the ways was that the botnet malware was installed when the user elected to install one of a number of free vpns that allowed users to browse the internet anonymously or was installed as part of cracked software packages, or when users went to specific websites which were configured to prompt users for fake software updates which when installed compromised the end users’ computers and made them part of the botnet.    The botnet was used by criminals to conduct fraudulent activity and steal billions of dollars from banks, credit card issuers, federal lending programs, including pandemic relief Federal Disaster Loan Programs, by submitting fraudulent claims that originated from the infected computers compromised IP addresses.
