PRCI workshop on research methods for value chain analysis
Two presentations were given during the PRCI workshop on ‘Research methods for value chain analysis’, including one on the snakehead fish value chain, and another on research methods for value chain analysis
In February 2022, PRCI and Kasetsart University (KU) conducted a Southeast Asia workshop on Value Chain Analysis as a basis for developing cassava value chain analysis proposals by participating partner institutions. The objective of the workshop was to provide an overview of value chain analysis concepts and current research gaps in the SEA region. This was the first workshop as part of a workshop series on value chain analysis which aims to support USAID funded Innovation Lab for Food Security Policy Research, Capacity and Influence (PRCI) country partners to conduct value chain analysis studies. As a follow up, a second workshop on ‘Research methods for value chain analysis’ was conducted March 16, 2022. This workshop invited PRCI country partners from both South Asia and Southeast Asia.
The workshop had two presentations. Dr. Kulapa Kuldilok, Assistant Professor, Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics, KU, presented ‘Snakehead Fish Value Chain in Thailand’. The presentation discussed results from a study on analysis of snakehead fish supply chain in Thailand. Ben Belton from Michigan State University gave a presentation on ‘Research methods for value chain analysis’. The presentation focused on various aspects of value chain analysis research including scoping research, sample design, survey questionnaire structure, pre-testing, enumerator training, survey implementation, and quantitative data analysis. This session was followed by a group exercise and brief presentations by country teams based on the group work. The country teams are developing study protocols for implementing the value chain studies.
