MSU Professor and Researcher selected as NASA Science Team Members for two Satellite Missions
Narendra N. Das, Ph.D., Associate Professor in BAE and CEE, is serving on two NASA satellite missions as a Science Team member.
Dr. Narendra N. Das, an Associate Professor in the Departments of Biosystems & Agricultural Engineering and Civil and Environmental Engineering at Michigan State University (MSU), has been appointed as a NASA Science Team member for two prominent satellite missions: the NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar (NISAR) mission and the Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) mission. Das’ expertise in hydrology, microwave remote sensing, and its geophysical applications will contribute to these satellite missions.
In his role with the NISAR mission, scheduled for launch in near future, Das is responsible for developing algorithms to generate high-resolution (200 m) global soil moisture data products. His work involves creating algorithm software and ancillary data within his Remote Sensing in Hydrology and Agriculture Lab (RSHAL) at MSU's Farrall Hall. Additionally, NASA has funded Das to conduct calibration and validation campaigns for the NISAR high-resolution soil moisture product at MSU's Kellogg Biological Station.
Das also serves as a Science Team member for the NASA Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) mission. He has been involved with the SMAP mission a position for over 15 years. His significant contributions include algorithm development and enhancements to the SMAP active-passive product. Recently, he was selected for another three-year term, continuing his pivotal role in advancing soil moisture remote sensing technologies.
