The Michigan State University (MSU) Pesticide Safety Education Program (PSEP), in partnership with Michigan State University Extension and Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD), are offering an in-person core manual review class followed by a core pesticide applicator certification testing on Jan. 21 at the 2025 Great Lakes Trade Expo, 303 Monroe Ave NW, Grand Rapids, MI 49503.

This course consists of a 4-hour review that covers all the chapters of the National Pesticide Applicators Certification Core Manual. It is designed to instruct handlers on the proper techniques for mixing, loading and applying pesticides. This training will prepare participants for the MDARD restricted use pesticide (RUP) test, which will be administered in the afternoon. The morning session is mandatory for those planning to take the test. We recommend participants read and study the core manual before attending the review. If you do not have a copy of the manual or need an updated copy, you may order the manual. Michigan State University Extension county offices may also have copies available, but please call ahead for availability.

Participants should register in advance when possible. The check-in for the program is at 8 a.m. The review class will be from 8:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. MDARD will begin the testing session at approximately 1 p.m.

The cost for this core review class is $10, which is paid at registration. The fee for the applicator certification is paid to the “State of Michigan” and is separate from the core review session fee. The Commercial Applicator Certification fee is $75, Private Applicator fee is $50 and the Registered Applicator fee is $45. Private applicator certification fees are waived for Military Veterans if a copy of a service members DD214 is provided.

MDARD emphasizes that the certification process is not complete until applicators have submitted a completed license application and the application fee. A check payable to the State of Michigan is the only payment type accepted for the applicator certification fee. Postage paid envelopes to send certification payment to MDARD will be provided at the session. Payment is not accepted on the date of the exam. Cash or credit card payments will not be accepted.
