Landscape Architecture Student Receives National Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Scholarship
Ava Yon, 3rd year Landscape Architecture student, has been selected as a recipient of the 2024 Michigan Chapter ASLA Foundation Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Scholarship.
Ava Yon, 3rd year Landscape Architecture student, has been selected as a recipient of the 2024 Michigan Chapter ASLA (MiASLA) Foundation Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Scholarship. This scholarship was created to support students from historically underrepresented demographics in their pursuit of an undergraduate or master’s degree in landscape architecture.
The MiASLA Foundation’s aim is to aid in the development of a more diverse and inclusive generation of future leaders in the profession of landscape architecture, that is more representative of their communities.
“I feel honored and grateful to have been chosen as a 2024 DEI Scholarship winner,” said Yon. “Similar to how I feel about my work in the classroom, I feel passionate about giving back to the landscape architecture community and see this as a great opportunity to expand my horizons,” Yon continued.
Awardees of this scholarship are expected to be active members of the Michigan Chapter ASLA DEI Committee for the full calendar year that the scholarship is awarded. Committee responsibilities include participation on one or more DEI Subcommittees including attending monthly meetings and forwarding the mission of the DEI Committee.
Awardees are also encouraged to participate as a speaker for the Michigan ASLA Diverse Perspectives Webinar Series explaining how this scholarship has impacted their perspective on Landscape Architecture and how it has helped further their career.
“I have always felt supported by the landscape architecture community, especially here at Michigan State University. My positive perspective of this profession is continuously supported throughout my education. I am looking forward to making new connections and learning from others as I serve the next year on the DEI board. I plan to use this award to further my education in ways that I would otherwise be unable,” explained Yon.
