Corey Marsh Ecological Research Center hosts Fall Research Symposium

Students and faculty conducting research at Corey Marsh presented their recent findings in a series of lightning talks.

Corey Marsh Ecological Research Center hosted its first annual Fall Research Symposium on Friday, October 13 in the Corey Marsh Event Barn in Laingsburg, MI. 

This symposium brought MSU faculty, students, and staff together with partners and community members to learn more about research activities happening at the center over the past year. Students presentations were a highlight of the afternoon, including:

  • Wild Rice Project: Effects of Water and Wildlife - J. Zapata, Environmental Biology/Plant Biology Major
  • Reproductive Success of Cavity-Nesting Bird Species - K. Craig, Fisheries and Wildlife Major
  • Effect of Borrelia burgdorferi on Blacklegged Tick Host-Seeking Behavior - M. Volk, Fisheries and Wildlife PhD Student
  • Survey of Fish Diversity in Corey Marsh - G. Bartscht, Fisheries and Wildlife Major
  • CMERC Wildlife Monitoring Program - R. Korus, Environmental Biology/Zoology Major
  • Avian Predation of the Red-Backed Salamander - E. Piovesana, Fisheries and Wildlife Major
  • Survey of Historical Chemical Use at CMERC - S. Johnson, Human Biology Major; Lyman Briggs College
  • Bumble Bee Habitat Use in Natural, Urban, and Agricultural Settings - S. Miller, Entomology PhD Student
  • Sedge Wren Surveys at CMERC - T. Markwood, Environmental Biology/Zoology Major; Lyman Briggs College

Participants also heard a broad overview about CMERC from Center Coordinator Jennifer Owen, and learned more about the CMERC Faculty Fellows Program from 2022-23 cohort members Melissa Charenko (Lyman Briggs College), Matt Rossi (Department of Writing, Rhetoric, and American Cultures), and Garth Sabo (Center for Integrative Studies in the Arts and Humanities). 

Corey Marsh Ecological Research Center plans to make this an annual event to highlight ongoing research projects and offer students an opportunity to share their work.
