Coconut water can be seen in grocery stores, convenience stores and gas stations as part of the regular beverage choices. Coconut water contains a high level of Potassium and electrolytes. This is why it promises to keep you more hydrated than regular water or sports drinks. Coconut water has fewer calories when compared to typical sports drink and sodas. It is naturally sweet and contains potassium that will help you feel replenished if you are engaged in a light workout.
However, if you plan to use coconut water and are a professional athlete, it’s best to use regular water to stay hydrated. The key ingredients to staying hydrated is a mix of magnesium and sodium. There are several kinds of coconut water available. Make sure to read the nutrition label and ingredients list to make sure your coconut water doesn’t have added sugars.
Michigan State Univesrity Extension says that coconut water has many uses besides hydration, like cooking, skin moisturizer and medicinal purposes. The following is a smoothie recipe that uses coconut water.
Ingredients
3 cups of fresh mango, ripe and diced
2 cups of coconut water (real coconut)
3 tbsps agave nectar
2 tsps vanilla extract
¼ tsp lime juice
1 pinch of sea salt
Directions
- Combine all ingredients in a blender and puree
- Serve in a cup and enjoy
