2024 MSU Saginaw Valley Research and Extension Center Field Day is August 20

MSU and industry researchers will discuss issues that impact dry bean and sugarbeet production in Michigan.

Michigan State University Extension is excited to invite you to the Michigan State University (MSU) Saginaw Valley Research and Extension Center Field Day, 3775 S. Reese Rd., Frankenmuth, MI 48734, on Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2024. Morning field tours will provide participants with the opportunity to learn about current pest management and production issues and opportunities that impact dry beans and sugarbeets. Registration will begin with coffee from 8 to 9 a.m. The field tour presentations will kick off at 9 a.m. Participants will rotate through six different stops and conclude with lunch. 

Field presentations (9 a.m. to noon): 

  1. Nitrogen management and harvest timing: Too early, too little, too lateKurt Steinke, professor in the MSU Department of Plant, Soil, and Microbial Sciences (PSM), and Spencer Fleming, MSU graduate student 
  2. Insect management and the impact of planting date on weed control and in dry bean systemsChris Difonzo, field crops entomologist, Scott Bales, PSM dry bean systems specialist, and Jacob Felsman, MSU graduate student  
  3. Sugarbeet agronomy, research update and Truvera sugarbeetsCorey Guza, general agronomist, Michigan Sugar Company, and Ian Waldecker, MSU graduate student 
  4. Sugarbeet genetics and sugarbeet advancementRachel Naegele, assistant professor, United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Agricultural Research Service (ARS), and Dave Wishowski, director of Sugarbeet Advancement, MSU Extension  
  5. Dry bean variety developmentScott Bales, MSU PSM 
  6. Sugarbeet pathology issuesLinda Hanson, research plant pathologist with USDA ARS and PSM adjunct full professor, and Jaime Willbur, PSM assistant professor 

The program is free, but registration is encouraged so we have an accurate count for lunch. Please register by midnight on Aug. 16.
