Overview

This Campus Renovation project by Sara Kotarski, Sara Burns, Brooke Jesue and Alix Zysk was entered in the 2015 IIDA Dr. Virginia North Student Competition. The team received first prize for this project.

Competition Description

"Students may select one of their existing/completed Junior or Senior Level commercial design projects and write an essay describing how the design solution impacts user wellness. The essay will identify the cognitive, physical and emotional wellness that is addressed in the design solution."

Project Description

The project goal is to create a cohesive and functional design for the renovation of MSU's Intramural Sports (IM) fitness facility and Kinesiology Department located in the IM Circle building. The design will achieve a sense of community by creating recreation and lounge areas for both faculty and students to utilize. Through the use of active colors and modern equipment, the design will modernize the existing elements of the space, while keeping the beauty and integrity of this historic building.

Kinesiology Concept Statement

The design goal for the Kinesiology Department is to modernize the existing elements in the space and create multiple work zones for various tempos. The basement labs in the facility will contain muted colors that are non-distractive and promote concentration. The first and second floors within the Kinesiology Department will contain neutral color schemes with pops of color to provide a fun, yet appropriate work environment for students and staff. Overall, the design will follow an open floor plan that enhances natural light and promotes environmental sustainability.

IM Fitness Facility Concept Statement

The design goal for the IM Circle fitness facility will be to modernize the existing architecture and give the building an updated feel, while still keeping the original impression of the space; this being accomplished, while including appropriate secured access entries to accommodate the group fitness areas, as well as membership access to fitness facilities. The basement level will house group fitness classrooms and follow an open, flowing floorplan. The first and second floors will be for individual fitness. The color scheme will be inspired by the pre-existing color palette and will include bright pops of color to stimulate energy. Overall, the design will aim to promote an environment where users will be motivated to be active while still captivating the original integrity of the space.
