Landscape Horticulture Assistant/ Associate Professor and Director of Chadwick Arboretum

The Department of Horticulture and Crop Science ( https://hcs.osu.edu ) and Chadwick Arboretum ( Chadwickarboretum@osu.edu ) at The Ohio State University seek applications for an Assistant or Associate Professor with dual responsibilities of teaching within the Department of Horticulture and Crop Science and as the Director of the OSU Chadwick Arboretum. This is a 12-month professional practice position (non-tenure track) with 60% teaching and 40% administration responsibilities. The Chadwick Arboretum & Learning Gardens is a 30-acre living resource for education, research, outreach, and recreation within The Ohio State University’s campus in Columbus, Ohio. It is a cherished urban green space used by OSU faculty, students, and a diverse group of external stakeholders. It is home to many themed gardens and collections, including a green roof garden and labyrinth garden. Chadwick is also home to the OSU Cultivar Trial Gardens, which are utilized each year in collaboration with breeding companies to evaluate ornamental bedding plant landscape performance and consumer preference. The location of the cultivar trials in Columbus provides a unique opportunity for national and international audiences to view the trials as part of AmericanHort’s Cultivate conference programming each year.

Specific responsibilities of the position will include teaching undergraduate courses in the areas of landscape design and management, woody and herbaceous plant identification, and/or plant propagation; mentoring undergraduate students; and collaborating with OSU faculty and staff, state-wide educators, and the Ornamental Plant Germplasm Center. Furthermore, as director of Chadwick Arboretum & Learning Gardens, responsibilities will include setting direction on program priorities, providing oversight for plant collections, and planning gardens to enhance student learning opportunities. The successful candidate will also collaborate with arboretum staff to implement enhancements and provide arboretum-initiated educational programming, develop opportunities and programs to maximize the use of the arboretum as a living classroom, and promote the arboretum to colleagues as a teaching, research, Extension, and outreach resource. The faculty hire will also publish and disseminate cultivar trial results and other educational arboretum resources and assist the CFAES Office of Advancement with obtaining extramural funds.
