Graduate Teaching Assistantship (M.Sc. or Ph.D.) in Operations,
Silviculture, and Forest Management at the University of Maine


Background
Faculty at the University of Maine are seeking a graduate student (MSc. / Ph.D.)
interested in teaching and applied research for a fully supported Teaching Assistantship
(TA) beginning in the Fall of 2025. The role includes teaching support for core
coursework in the School of Forest Resources (SFR) curriculum, including both FOR
205 – Advanced Forest Measurements and FOR 408/409 – Silviculture. In addition, the
student will work directly with co-advisors, Dr. Mike Premer, Assistant Professor of
Forest Management, and Dr. Anil Raj Kizha, Associate Professor of Forest Operations,
to develop an original thesis/dissertation work for completion of the graduate degree.


Support
This position is fully supported and provides approximately $21,972 per year for 2.5
years (M.Sc.) or $27,647 per year for 3.5 years (Ph.D.) in stipend support, full health
insurance, and a tuition waiver for 19 credits per year.


Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have solid quantitative and computing skills, proficiency in field
measurements, and a demonstrated ability to conduct independent research. High
levels of intellectual curiosity and self-motivation are essential. The preferred candidate
will have experience with the R software environment, package development, and opensource
Geographic Information Systems, or an eagerness to learn.
