Flower Farmer and Studio Assistant
Hiring Organization:
We Adore Flowers
Employment type: Full-Time
Job Location: Ypsilanti MI
Application Due Date: April 15, 2023
Yes! We want you! Join us! (magical and silly fingergun dance)
Our beloved Kate, three years here, is hanging up the day to day straw hat. She’ll be around some and so will Shanan, Erica and Lindsey, but I need a new day to day person or two. Once a WAFer you join the ranks of some of the best farmers, fun makers, thought thinkers, fly on the flyers and badasses around. I will forever be grateful for your work here and vow to help you on your journey.
You are:
-a kind person
-a person with a notably great attitude
-someone who likes to eat “To Do Lists” for breakfast
-probably a performer, athlete, a dancer, a server, a doer, a maker, a nature lover and you see yourself as tough person
-healthy, strong, can lift 50 pounds, and are excited about the free workout that is flower farming
-on time, 100% trustworthy, will not let the ship sink on your watch, always looking to be helpful, steadfast, can focus under pressure and is true blue
-living in Ypsi/15 mins away
-available either mornings or evenings. I am puzzling together a team, your hours based on your needs.
-available May through at least the end of October. Hours become more minimal after that, let me know what you need/want.
That’s really it.
You will be doing:
-Farm work: Weeding, watering, planting, washing buckets, harvesting, mulching, general clean up and this and that farm stuff. You get to use your brain a lot but some days there is a big stack of the same thing to do, it is kinda dull work and unglamorous a chunk of the time-it is farming. Personally I love just about every part, but you need to know dull and unglam is for real.
-Wedding work: No design experience needed, it’d be great but I need someone who is handy, able to think ahead, who can move stuff in a thoughtful way, who can set stuff out without knocking stuff over, who can put stuff together and get us cleaned up and out of there! I need an assistant, someone who can move quickly, stay focused and be cool under pressure. But ya, it’s super fun, creative work, with lots of laughs a lot of the time and is never dull and is very glamorous.
You get:
-A fun and flexible part time job. I am looking for short blocks of farming 3-4 hours at a time for 2-4 weekdays plus scheduled Saturdays. Not every Saturday but lots in Spring and Fall.
-A temporarily $13 an hour for farm training and $22 an hour for on site wedding work. There is as a 3 month training period but then there will be a wage increase based on performance, something like $14-16+ an hour for farm work.* Your bonus will be your training hours x (hourly rate-training rate) so those training hours will be made up to you when you complete the season. Other bonuses are possible if we meet our financial numbers.
-To learn from the best. We were voted “Best Florist” from Current magazine 2022. I am second generation MSU horticulturist, and a committed forever student of farming, design, daily action, and how to be a better human on this gorgeous planet.
-The most pleasant working conditions possible. We are pretty small so our tasks are varied. We don’t do farm work when it’s super hot or pouring rain. With wedding work we do whatever weather there is, it will be hot or rainy sometimes.
-To be a part of farm that is still evolving, becoming something even better. We would love your opinion, your smarts, your addition.
-Time off in winter! I hope that is a perk! Our work is seasonal, it starts in April, and is going hard May through November with hours slowing down in December. If you need some hours in winter, I can find you some, but things are slower.
You might have:
-A special set of skills like floral design, business expertise, a strong farming background etc. I would love to talk more with you. I invite your special powers here. I would love to partner with someone who can add another level of service to our community. We will talk about that, but let’s start at the beginning with training and find a path over the season to combine our talents.
Some important things to mention:
-We have cats and there are bugs and bees on our farm you must be ok with them. No texting, no phone addicts, no substances, no smoking, no headphones but music and podcasts are allowed at times.
-This is a hard job for folks that don’t like hard jobs. It is the best job for people who want to be a part of something cool, who enjoy lots of movement, who love quality, you also want to reach for the moon. It is an incredible honor to be among all this beauty and to serve this amazing community in this loving and creative way.
