True or Not, so What, #6

6 - Urban market demand for food exceeds rural market demand in all regions of Africa.
True
Even in East and Southern Africa (excluding South Africa and Botswana), the least urbanized region on the continent, urban food demand accounts for 52% of total demand for food through markets, (Source: Reardon et al., (2015). “Transformation of African Agrifood Systems in the New Era of Rapid Urbanization and the Emergence of a Middle Class.” Chapter in the Proceedings Volume of the ReSAKSS Annual Conference, “Beyond a Middle Income Africa.”)

So What?
The importance of food purchases and the need for cash earnings among rural farmers, combined with this stylized fact about the urban food demand, means that the efficiency of rural-urban linkages is central to ensuring food security in rural as well as urban areas. This implies a greater need than ever for investments in transport, private storage and cold chains, efficient rural assembly markets, more efficient and clean urban market places, and systems for information flow between urban- and rural- markets.
