MSU and industry researchers will discuss current issues impacting dry beans and sugarbeets at the Saginaw Valley Research and Extension Center in Frankenmuth, MI. Growers will have the opportunity to learn about weed and insect resistance issues, varietal advances and production practices in dry bean, soil fertility strategies and pathology issues in sugarbeet. 

Registration will begin with coffee from 8 to 9 a.m. The field tour presentations will kick off at 9 a.m. Participants will rotate through six different stops and conclude with lunch.

Field presentations (9 a.m. to noon): 

  1. Nitrogen management and harvest timing: Too early, too little, too late – Kurt Steinke, professor in the MSU Department of Plant, Soil, and Microbial Sciences (PSM), and Spencer Fleming, MSU graduate student 
  2. Insect management and the impact of planting date on weed control and in dry bean systems – Chris Difonzo, field crops entomologist, Scott Bales, PSM dry bean systems specialist, and Jacob Felsman, MSU graduate student  
  3. Sugarbeet agronomy, research update and Truvera sugarbeets – Corey Guza, general agronomist, Michigan Sugar Company, and Ian Waldecker, MSU graduate student 
  4. Sugarbeet genetics and sugarbeet advancement – Rachel Naegele, assistant professor, United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Agricultural Research Service (ARS), and Dave Wishowski, director of Sugarbeet Advancement, MSU Extension  
  5. Dry bean variety development – Scott Bales, MSU PSM 
  6. Sugarbeet pathology issues – Linda Hanson, research plant pathologist with USDA ARS and PSM adjunct full professor, and Jaime Willbur, PSM assistant professor 

Recertification credits are approved for private core and category 1A pesticide applicator licenses (2 credits).
