Foundations of Effective County Administration is a newly launched educational program by Michigan State University Extension, designed to equip new and aspiring county administrative officials with the essential knowledge, skills, and capacity needed for effective governance. This self-paced, online program aims to empower participants to confidently navigate the complexities of county leadership.

The program features recorded video lectures from MSU Extension specialists and experienced county administrators, complemented by readings and interactive activities. Throughout the course, administrators will share their expertise and insights, offering practical advice and lessons learned from their own careers.

Key concepts covered include:

  • Roles and Responsibilities of the County Administrator
    • Understand the core duties of a county administrator and how to effectively manage county operations.
  • Working with Your Board to Build a Good Governance Culture
    • Learn strategies for fostering productive relationships and collaboration with your county board to promote a culture of good governance.
  • Tools to Support Effective Leadership and Innovative Problem Solving
    • Explore practical tools and strategies that support effective leadership, innovative thinking, and solving complex problems.
