Michigan State University: Dean of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources
Michigan State University, the nation’s pioneer land-grant university, seeks an experienced, dynamic, strategic, visionary, and collaborative leader for the position of Dean of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources.
Working with faculty, staff, students and other stakeholders, the new Dean will lead a premier College of Agriculture and Natural Resources to enhance its strong national reputation and address the opportunities and exciting challenges associated with global agriculture and natural resources in the 21st century. Given the vital role of agriculture and natural resources in Michigan’s economy, the Dean will foster internal and external partnerships that engage global, federal, and other state leaders.
The MSU College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (CANR) consists of two schools, 11 departments, several institutes and centers, and 18 research and extension stations. It has approximately 300 tenure-stream faculty, 800 academic staff, and 700 support staff. The college currently enrolls more than 3,400 undergraduate and 700 master’s and doctoral students in its distinctive academic programs. The budget for CANR is about $120 million, and it received over $74 million in research grants last year.
The Position
Reporting to the Provost, the Dean is responsible for overseeing CANR’s programs, budgets, MSU AgBioResearch, MSU Extension and international programs. S/he will work collaboratively with a broad range of internal and diverse constituencies including department chairs and directors, the College Advisory Committee, the faculty, deans of the Colleges of Veterinary Medicine, Natural Science, Engineering, and Social Science among others, and outside stakeholders to foster a program that is both strategic and innovative.
The Dean will provide leadership for external relations, building linkages across departments and colleges, diversifying and enhancing revenue sources, strengthening diversity and enhancing research for the College and MSU.
Qualifications
- Earned doctorate in a relevant field with outstanding scholarly accomplishments;
- Significant, successful record of administrative leadership including supervisory and budgetary experience;
- The ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff and external constituencies at all levels in a complex and diverse environment;
- The capacity to work collegially and inspire faculty, directors and chairs during a period of exciting change in their field;
- Exceptional written, oral and interpersonal communication skills; and
- A commitment to diversity.
